Are there a ton of questions swirling around in your head regarding an upcoming engagement session? How do I make it special? What should we wear? What else should I know??!!! We recently approached Katie Thurmes with Jenna Walker Photography and asked her to give us some advice/tips. Katie’s photography reflects her unique and fresh personality! Her ability to capture raw beauty in a photojournalistic fashion brings a new twist to documentary wedding photography. We think the photos of a recent engagement shoot prove what we’ve known all along… she’s simply stunning! So, here you go… straight from the mouth of a pro!
* Own your look: Downtown elegance or country chic – pick a look and love it! Whether it’s a bright and playful skirt, a bold jacket, funky hats, rain boots, cocktail attire, evening elegance, bowties…there are no limits. You play by the rules every day – this is your chance to break them.
* Love on Color! Aside from bright and bold clothing – which really pops in any urban environment or natural outdoor setting – think about other ways to add a splash of color. A red umbrella on a rainy day, a funky parasol as you frolic through fields (yes, frolic!), a bouquet of tulips…think color.
* Do what you love & be you! You and your main squeeze have those hobbies that make you tick. Show us! Are you big skiers? play around on the guitar? dabble in painting? big into river rafting? Always wanted to cruise around on Tandem bikes? These are the things that say “YOU.” Nothing will get you laughing more and showing your true colors.
* Add some motion & have fun! No one can fault a photo of themselves laughing. Find ways to do bring back the fun in your engagement session and you will not be disappointed. Get running, moving, twirling – these are the things that keep the photos real.
* Get your hair & make-up done. There are some amazing make-up artists out there – whether you are one that normally wears a bit of make-up or not, these stylists know how to up the ante just enough for photos. The make-up you’re wearing tends to wash out a bit in photos, so a little extra never hurts.
Have fun. Everyone feels a little silly being in front of the camera. The more you realize this and have fun in spite of it, the more natural the photos will be. Congrats on your engagement – enjoy the ride – it is a fun one!
